NANOFLON
X-Treme Lubricant Additive
Stands Up to Pressure and Wear
Newark, N.J.
(March 29, 2002) Shamrock's new NANOFLON X-Treme
multifunctional additive is designed to significantly improve the
extreme pressure and anti-wear properties of industrial, automotive
and grease lubricants. Conveniently predispersed in mineral oil, the
new additive is a blend of premium, submicron polytetrafluoroethylene
(PTFE), organo-molybdenum complex and organic sulfur compound. This
combination creates a synergistic effect, providing better extreme
pressure performance than can be achieved with the individual components
(Please see Figure 1).

NANOFLON
X-Treme blended PTFE/organo-molybdenum complex/organic sulfur
compound provides better extreme pressure performance than
can be achieved with the individual components. For example,
5% of NANOFLON X-Treme can withstand a weld load of
400 kg - significantly more than its components alone.

Applications for
the new lubricant additive may include gear oil, penetrating oil,
metal forming fluid and paste, grease, chain oil, railroad lubricants
and CV joint grease.

Shamrock
Announces Revolutionary New Capability
In Nanosized Polytetrafluoroethylene
Newark,
N.J. (March 15, 2002) Shamrock Technologies today filed
a patent for a revolutionary new method of producing nanosized polytetrafluoroethylene
(PTFE). Using this proprietary method, Shamrock can offer fully controlled
distributions of PTFE in the submicron range (200 700 nanometers),
as well as tightly controlled chemical and physical properties. The
new nanosized PTFE products will be marketed under the trade name
NANOFLON.
It is expected that the new NANOFLON
products will have expanded applicability beyond the traditional PTFE
markets of inks, coatings and lubricants into non-traditional markets
such as thermoplastic fibers, polymeric computer chips and agricultural
chemicals, to name a few.
Through
this patent-pending production method, Shamrock is able to fully control
the particle size. This significantly impacts molecular weight,
crystallinity and morphology of the nanosized PTFE, thereby achieving
key PTFE properties, including slip, refractive index, wettability
surfactant and dielectric constant. It even may be possible to expand
the PTFE structure within other materials to achieve a negative Poisson's
Ratio.
According
to Shamrock Chairman William B. Neuberg, "This new nano technology
is a significant breakthrough that will enable creative chemists to
now apply the properties of PTFE to virtually any material in a myriad
of novel applications."
Possible
markets/applications for NANOFLON
PTFE may include:
- Offset, gravure
and flexographic inks
- Digital and
electronic inks
- Coatings: Industrial,
automotive top coats, etc.
- Optical coatings
- Thermoplastic
fibers
- Plastic/Thermoplastic
gears components
- Wire and cable
- Elastomeric
seals and parts
- Cosmetics,
personal care products, hair care products and sunscreens
- Lubricants,
greases and oils
- Agricultural
chemicals and pesticides
- Textile fibers
- Electronics/Electrical
coatings and components
- Polymeric computer
chips
NANOFLON
PTFE is available as a powder (NANOFLON
P) or dispersion (NANOFLON
D) in water or common organic fluids. It is free of surfactants, wetting
agents, rheological additives and pH-adjusting agents. NANOFLON
P powder is agglomerated to 10-15 microns to minimize dusting during
handling and is designed to disperse with regular mixing. The agglomerates
break down with a resulting average particle size ranging from 200-700
nanometers. This provides up to one hundred times the surface area
of other PTFE particles at equal weight (30µ vs. .3µ)
for enhanced surface energy properties.
