Enhancing the Performance
of
Lithographic Inks
At Shamrock, enhancing ink with the right balance of performance properties is more than just a science; it’s an art. Each ink must be stable, printable, curable and deliver good adhesion, anti-blocking, slip, anti-mar and rub resistance. Our micronized powders, compounds and dispersions (shown above) enhance these properties while improving the overall formulation for optimum performance.

To complement science and art, Shamrock offers a complete line of micronized synthetic and natural waxes, including polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), modified polyethylenes, modified amides, carnauba wax and other natural waxes. In addition, our industry-seasoned specialists support your applications and work with you to find the right solution. We will tailor our products to your specific application needs.

Micronized Powders
SST™ Series PTFE
The SST Series is Shamrock’s premier line of micronized PTFE for exceptional slip and rub resistance. Each powder in the series features a closely defined mean particle size with a narrow, uniform particle size distribution for enhanced manufacturing control of your process and ultimate ink performance for your customers. PTFE is insoluble in all solvents, even at peak melting temperatures up to 600°F. Applications: Heat-set, sheet-fed, metal deco and UV lithographic inks where slip is critical.

S-Series™ Polyethylene
and Synthetic Waxes
These stir-in PE and synthetic waxes promote outstanding
rub resistance and slip. They exhibit limited solubility in solvents, thus avoiding recrystallization that may cause grind or recoatability problems. Our exclusive processing assures a narrow particle size distribution consistently time after time.  Applications: Heat-set, sheet-fed and UV lithographic inks where rub resistance is key. Synthetic waxes are typically combined with PTFE for high slip in heat-set lithographic inks.

FluoroSLIP™ Series PTFE-Polyethylene
The FluoroSLIP Series of stir-in PTFE-PE blends is custom designed to deliver the ultimate in slip and rub resistance for the full range of paste inks. We customize each product for optimum performance by varying the molecular weight of the PE component to best suit the ink and drying mechanism. Therefore, the FluoroSLIP blends provide just the right cost/performance balance for your formulation. They are available in powder form as the FluoroSLIP Series and also in the vehicle of your choice as FluoroSPERSE dispersions. Applications: All paste inks.

Specialized Products
SD™ Series
Super dispersible polyethylenes for outstanding rub resistance in offset lithographic inks. Applications: Heat-set, sheet-fed and UV lithographic inks where rub resistance is critical.

Dispersions and Compounds
FluoroSPERSE™ PTFE Dispersions
Shamrock dispersions incorporate the same high quality PTFE found in our premier SST Series micronized PTFE. Therefore, the FluoroSPERSE line also provides exceptional slip and rub resistance. The line is comprised of stable, white or toned PTFE in a variety of heat-set and sheet-fed vehicles, including viscoelastic hydrocarbon varnishes, linseed oil, lithographic oil and soya varnishes. These hardworking dispersions help to increase efficiency in high volume, automated printing ink manufacturing processes. Since they are pre-wetted, they also boost effectiveness in flushed color lithographic inks. FluoroSPERSE dispersions are available in paste or pumpable form. Applications: Ideal for lithographic inks in which flushed color is used.

CeraSPERSE™ Wax Compounds
These polyethylene compounds are the next generation of Shamrock’s S-Series polyethylene powdered waxes. They provide excellent slip and rub resistance at addition levels of 5-8% based on formulation. Often, ink manufacturers also will add 1-3% FluoroSPERSE PTFE to further enhance the protective properties of the film. Shamrock’s CeraSPERSE line is available in hydrocarbon varnish, linseed oil, lithographic oil and soya varnish. These compounds facilitate ease of addition to offset ink during any stage of ink manufacturing. For example, they may be added directly into the mixing container with resultant savings in ink batch weigh-up time as compared to powders. CeraSPERSE compounds are available in paste or pumpable forms. Applications: All paste inks.

CeraSPERSE™ Intaglio Compounds
These easy-to-use modified wax compounds are unique mixtures of synthetic and natural waxes in aliphatic ink oil. Applications: Security offset printing.

UltraGlide™ UV PTFE Dispersions
These ultrafine PTFE dispersions in tripropyleneglycol diacrylate monomer are ideal for applications in which high slip is critical. They combine the unmatched stability and uniformity of a predispersed additive, while retaining excellent visual properties. UltraGlide UV PTFE dispersions are easy to incorporate with no settling, foaming or effects on viscosity. Applications: High slip applications, including clears and high gloss formulae.

EverGlide™ UV Wax Dispersions
These superfine specialty dispersions of prewetted polyethylene and natural waxes in tripropyleneglycol diacrylate` provide added slip and clarity retention. EverGlide dispersions deliver a small, uniform particle size with remarkable slip, scuff resistance and gloss retention. These stable, uniform dispersions are easily incorporated into any formula. Being thoroughly wetted, they provide a high degree of transparency in clear formulae. Also, there is no caking or dusting compared to powders. Applications: Ideally suited for both clear mattes and high gloss formulae.

Problem Solvers
Shamrock Technologies - Enhancing the Performance of Lithographic Inks

Problem: "My production batch is too low in tack for my customer."

Solution: SR-79™ Tack Adjuster is a dry, micronized stir-in soluble hydrocarbon resin designed to increase tack in web offset and sheet-fed ink systems. It can be "cold cut" into the batch and dissolves readily in all ink vehicles by a simple mixing operation. No special dispersion equipment is required.

Problem: "My oxidizing offset ink forms a brittle skin in the container and causes too many press wash-ups when drying on the rollers."

Solution: Shamrock’s AntiSkin™ additives prevent skinning in the container, as well as drying on the rollers. They are available in powder form (S-111) or in a soya dispersion (AntiSkin 11) for maximum "open time." For a more moderate open time, choose AntiSkin 12.

Shamrock Technologies - Enhancing the Performance of Lithographic Inks

Problem: "My offset ink takes up too much water and becomes emulsified on long runs."

Solution: Choose one of the Aquapel™ hydrophobic additives to reduce water pickup in a lithographic ink without appreciably reducing ink tack or body. Specifically, Aquapel Two offers increased hydrophobicity at lower viscosity versus Aquapel.

Shamrock Technologies - Enhancing the Performance of Lithographic Inks

Problem: "My process reds have a tendency to scum and bleed in acid fountain solutions."

Solution: Micronized Bufferette™ pH control additives are designed to control pH drift, as well as prevent bleeding and water logging on the offset press. They are easy to incorporate and can be stirred into a finished ink without milling. Choose from Bufferette 510 or 610 powders, or Bufferette 310S dispersion.

Problem: "My resinous emulsion system becomes unstable when I incorporate additional water."

Solution: Add Emulso 1:10 and you can incorporate as much as 20% water into an oleo-resinous system. Use Emulso 1:10 in the initial oil phase of the premix to ensure total dispersion. Formulation is simple: add 1% Emulso 1:10 for every 10% water desired in the ink formula.
